Sound-a-Likes!

Its always a thrill when you think you’ve discovered two tracks divided by several decades which have more than a passing similarity between each other.

In this case given the artists involved I would suggest a deep seated regard for all things Brian Wilson related by the wonderful Jessica Pratt!

Jessica Pratt – ‘Life Is’

In the opening track of her latest album of 2024, ‘Here in the Pitch’, San Francisco singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt calls back to the baroque pop movement of the 1960s. Distinctly grand, bumping drums begin the track referencing the 1965 Glen Campbell ballad ‘Guess I’m Dumb’. Soft guitar strums accompany, further interpolating this overlooked chamber pop gem, with the luminous reverbed production echoing the great Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound.

Glen Campbell – ‘Guess I’m Dumb’

Born in 1936 in the depths of poverty, Glen Campbell followed a true rags to riches story, nearly drowning to an early death as a toddler along the Little Missouri River. After being gifted his first guitar at the age of 4, Campbell quickly uncovered a special talent, moving to LA and becoming a well sought-after session guitarist by the late 1950’s working with the prolific Wrecking Crew.

Not only an excellent guitarist, Campbell also had an exceptional voice with a notable falsetto and as a result was recruited to fill in for Brian Wilson whilst the Beach Boys were on the road in 1964.

As a gift of gratitude to Campbell, Brian Wilson co-wrote and produced the song ‘Guess I’m Dumb’ for Campbell to sing after it was rejected by his bandmates in the Beach Boys. The track was released as a single in 1965 to very little reception, becoming the greatest Wilson track you’ve never heard!

Staff Favourites & New Releases

Cory Hansen – ‘I Love People’

The latest release by Wand frontman Cory Hansen plays like a long lost 1970’s country folk record!

Lush orchestration and driving piano build a gentle, easy-listening atmosphere despite darker undertones led by political, ironic lyricism and character portraits.

Stereolab – ‘Instant Holograms On Metal Film’

After 15 years, the groop come back with a long awaited full length LP. Stereolab’s signature loungy krautrock infused pop stays fresh with a more modern, electronic approach to production than previous releases!

Natalie Bergman – ‘My Home Is Not In This World’

Highly anticipated follow up album by LA based singer-songwriter Natalie Bergman. Full of timeless melodies reminiscent of psychedelic soul and alt 60’s pop!

Pearl Charles – ‘Desert Queen’

Crafted in the secluded Joshua Tree desert, Californian singer-songwriter, Pearl Charles’ latest album is hazy and psychedelic with traces of 1970’s Laurel Canyon. Lush stax-like arrangements support Charles’ signature songwriting and sweet, dreamy vocals.
